REMOTE SCENIC RIDE - Known Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona
In this episode we explore the Chiricahua National Monument, an area known for jagged cliffs, gnarly trees and dusty bluffs. It’s also known as being out in the middle of nowhere and sports the nifty nickname of Wonderland of Rocks.
We followed a narrow 8-mile scenic route through the park, ending at Massai Point where several hiking trails veer into ravines and spiraling rock columns, pinnacles and hoodoos.
From there we made a pitstop at the Faraway Ranch, established in 1886 by Neil Erickson and Emma Peterson. You would think the name conjures up dreamy, spiritual
The ranch received its name from their daughter, Lillian, who claimed that the ranch was “god-awful far away from everything” in typical teenage verbiage.
Eventually the family opened up the homestead to tourists, charging them a hefty charge of $2.50/day to stay and explore the area. (Today’s rate would be around $200/day and didn’t have nearly the accommodations we’re used to today.
