THE END OF SUMMER - IS IT TIME TO LEAVE THE NORTH?

In this episode we finally emerge from our cabin after 3 long days and assess the situation. It’s definitely time to start heading south, but there’s still time for 1 more ride in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

We wander through Custer State Park – home to nearly 1,300 bison, elk, pronghorn antelope, mountain goats, deer, wandering turkeys and a sweet, fruit eating band of donkeys.  Riding through Custer State Park should be on everyone’s bucket list.

And not to be undone is Needles Highway – a 14-mile jaunt through rugged granite mountains, twisting roads and narrow tunnels.

Then it’s off to the mighty Mount Rushmore – aka The Shrine of Democracy.  Mount Rushmore has long been on our bucket list and we were not disappointed.  The 60ft high faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln have been carved from the granite face of Mount Rushmore and signify one of the world’s largest pieces of sculpture constructed.  It is also a very popular tourist attraction, but despite the crowds it’s still a must see.

There’s so much to see and do in this area that I know we’ll be back!
