Motorcycle Camping in STORMY Weather! Our Rookie Mistake!

Motorcycle tent camping during some wild and stormy weather can be a bit challenging - especially if you don't stake the tent down BEFORE the storm hits.

Unfortunately, we made a rookie mistake of not staking out our tent prior to the storms, so due to our complacency, we were a bit unprepared. But like everything we roll with the punches and add this mistake to our growing list of “what not to do next time”.

We love it when we stumble across a US Forest Campground and have it just about all to ourselves – especially since this summer has seen such an influx of campers and travelers. And for $5/night we couldn’t go wrong.

Lowland Campground is located approximately 20 miles north of Butte, MT and comes complete with restrooms and drinking water (it’s there – you just have to know where to look).

Our wanderings took us to the Elkhorn Ghost Town in Boulder, MT, but just so you know – it’s not really a ghost town with a handful of residents still residing in the remaining structures. It’s Montana’s smallest state park, with two buildings, Fraternity Hall and Gillian Hall, open year-round and well worth poking around in (you can even explore the 2nd floor of Fraternity Hall)

This off-the-beaten-path old silver mining town was another family-oriented town, boasting a church, school, hotel and saloon. Between the bottom dropping in silver prices and a diphtheria epidemic killing many children, the town was eventually abandoned to only a few hardy souls.

Elkhorn is another great place to get a glimpse into the past and marvel at the lives of others.
